Page history last edited by PBworks 5 years ago

Set up your own blog in ten easy steps!

(Note: You might want to print these instructions so you can have them beside you when you are on the internet site.)

1 Go to the internet site Go to http://www.blogger.com/start on the internet and then follow along below.
2 Create your blog Look at the second box "What's a blog?" and either you can "Take the Tour" or you can just start one. If you want to start one, click the red arrow "Create your blog now"
3 Create an account Create an account - for this you need a user name, password, a display name (the name you want on your posts - your first name or a pseudonym), an email address and you need to Accept the Terms. Then click the "Continue" arrow. (NOTE: Remember to write down your user name and password so you can get back into your blog!)
4 Name your blog Name your blog - Decide what you would like to call your blog and give it an "address". The address must be unique, that is if someone else already has taken it, then they will not let you use the same name. This is your blogs “address” on the internet. You can check your preferred name’s availability, by clicking on “Check availability” below the box. If it is taken, you will need to keep trying until you find one that is not taken. Then you need to verify the letters that you see floating - type what you see into the box. This tells blogger.com that you are a real person and not an automatic spammer.
5 Choose a template Choose a template - You can choose a template from the given options to start with. You can get fancy later and design your own. Pick one then continue - now you have created your own blog!
6 Start posting Now you can start posting - you can see a box to enter a title and some text (there are some style and font options like italics and boald) and when you are done writing your entry, you click on the "Publish Post" box and your post will be published onto your blog. You can also play around with the different tabs which let you edit your posts or moderate comments (e.g. decide if you want to let a comment that someone else makes to be posted or not.)
7 Explore settings Look at the tabs at the top, and go to Settings. Here you can change your title if you wish, you can write a 500 word description of your blog, you can decide if you want it to be public or private, you can allow people to email posts on your blog to their friends. You can also delete your blog, if you want to get rid of it, or start it over again.
8 Create a team space You can explore the other tabs, for examples on Options, you can invite other people to officially contribute to your blog. So if you wanted to use it for a team discussion, you could have other team members who could post as well as you. Follow the instructions.
9 Using the dashboard Look at the far top right of your screen, where you see the word "Dashboard". Click on that. From the Dashboard you can make new posts, or change your settings. If you go to the Dashboard, look to the right of the screen and there you can add a profile of yourself, with a photo, description etc. Or you can remain anonymous.
10 Start blogging Start blogging!
TIP When you want to make a post, you need to go to www.blogger.com and then login with your user name and password. If you want to just read your blog, you can go directly to your blog address (but you cannot post from there). People can make comments from the blog address, and then if you have chosen to moderate comments, you will get an email asking what you want to do with a particular comment - publish it, or delete it.
TIP There are some other aspects to set up, you can explore the buttons (e.g. you can see how often you want to archive your posts, and how you want the date written etc. ) The instructions are simple and there is a help function.
TIP If you want to do some preliminary research on blogs, you can use www.blogsearch.com and under "Search blogs and feeds" you can click on Google Blog Search and type in key words to view other blogs.
